The Day Pokémon TCG Gave Me RM5,000 Back
A real collecting experience from opening Ascended Heroes and Inferno X packs — and the lesson I learned about chasing Pokémon TCG cards.
As Pokémon TCG collectors, many of us know the feeling of chasing one specific card. Sometimes, the more we chase, the harder it feels to pull.
Recently, I was hunting for chase cards from Ascended Heroes. I opened 5 Booster Bundles and another 30 loose packs, hoping to pull something big.
Pack after pack, I got nothing special. No major hit. Nothing that really made the opening feel worth it.
At that point, I had already spent quite a lot trying to chase the card. Like many collectors, I started thinking, “Should I continue, or should I stop?”
Two Loose Packs Picked by My Wife
Then, something unbelievable happened.
One day, I went shopping with my wife. While we were there, I stopped by a place selling Pokémon cards. I was not planning to buy much that day.
My wife casually helped me pick two loose packs of Ascended Heroes.
Just two packs.
When I opened them, one of the packs contained the card that I never expected, which is:
MUR Charizard Y from Ascended Heroes.
I really could not believe it. After opening 5 Booster Bundles and 30 loose packs with no big result, the card finally appeared from one of only two packs chosen by my wife.
The Same Night, Another Charizard Appeared
But the story did not end there.
That same night, I went out to hang out with my friends. I decided to buy another Japanese Pokémon TCG set, Inferno X.
Again, I did not buy many packs. I randomly selected only two loose packs.
When I opened them, I pulled another amazing card:
SAR Charizard X from Inferno X.
Two different Charizard chase cards. Two different Japanese sets. Both pulled on the same day.
It was honestly unbelievable.
Around RM5,000 in Raw Card Value
After checking the market value, the total value of my raw card pulls that day was around RM5,000.
That amount covered the losses from my previous failed openings.
What made it even more special was not only the value of the cards, but how unexpected it was. I had spent so much before and got nothing. Then suddenly, with just a few loose packs, everything changed.
My Advice to Pokémon TCG Collectors
This experience taught me a very important lesson.
Do not spend too much money just to chase one specific card. Opening Pokémon TCG packs should be fun, not stressful.
Sometimes, you can open many packs and get nothing. Sometimes, the card you want comes when you least expect it.
My advice is simple:
Do not overspend chasing cards. Collect within your budget, enjoy the hobby, and let the pull come when the time is right.
For me, that time came on a normal shopping day with my wife and a casual night out with my friends.
That is what made this Pokémon TCG experience unforgettable.
